How To Prevent The Erosion of Plug Brick And Nozzle Brick

In the process of continuous casting, the erosion of plug bricks and nozzle bricks is an important factor affecting production efficiency and slab quality. The following are some measures to prevent the erosion of plug bricks and nozzle bricks:

I. Optimizing the materials and properties of refractories

High-alumina and zircon materials: For high-temperature steels, such as high manganese steel and stainless steel, high-alumina or zircon plug bricks and nozzle bricks are used, which have higher fire resistance and corrosion resistance.

Zirconium-carbon material: The use of Zirconium-carbon material in the head of plug brick and the key parts of nozzle brick can ensure the thermal shock stability and significantly improve the erosion resistance.

Adding anti-oxidation and anti-erosion components: Adding silicon carbide (SiC), zirconia (ZrO₂) and other components to the refractory can enhance the anti-oxidation and anti-erosion ability of the material.

II. Improving the structural design

Close cooperation between plug brick and nozzle brick: ensure that the contact surface of plug brick and nozzle brick is closely attached to avoid leakage and erosion of molten steel due to excessive gap.

Optimizing the shape of the plug brick: designing the head of the plug brick as a cone instead of a traditional hemisphere can improve the flow control accuracy and reduce the erosion of the brick by molten steel.

Add protective layer: spray or coat a layer of anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion coating, such as zirconia coating, on the surface of plug brick and nozzle brick.

III. Process optimization

Control the temperature and composition of molten steel: avoid the temperature of molten steel being too high or too low, and reduce the thermal shock and chemical erosion of molten steel on refractories. At the same time, reducing the oxygen content and inclusions in molten steel can reduce the erosion of refractories.

Optimize the baking process: fully bake the plug brick and nozzle brick before use to ensure that they are completely dry and avoid erosion caused by water residue.

Reduce the erosion of slag line: use materials with high wear resistance and erosion resistance, such as ZrO-C composite materials.

IV. Operation and maintenance

Timely cleaning and repair: In the process of use, check the erosion of plug bricks and nozzle bricks regularly, clean up the dregs and solidified molten steel on the surface in time, and repair or replace them if necessary.

Reasonable control of pouring speed: avoid excessive erosion of plug bricks and nozzle bricks caused by excessive molten steel flow.

Through the above measures, the erosion of plug bricks and nozzle bricks can be effectively reduced, their service life can be prolonged, and the stability of continuous casting production and slab quality can be improved.
