In Which High-temperature Processes Is Zircon Sand Most Widely Used

Zircon sand has been widely used in many high temperature processes because of its excellent high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and high melting point. The following are the most widely used high-temperature process fields of zircon sand:

I. Foundry industry

Precision casting: Zirconium sand is a common molding sand material in precision casting, especially suitable for manufacturing castings of high-end parts such as aerospace and automobile engines. Its high purity, fine particle size and low thermal expansion can ensure the surface quality and dimensional accuracy of castings.

Mold material: zircon sand containing 65% ~ 66% ZrO is directly used as the mold material of iron metal in foundry because of its melting resistance (melting point above 2500℃). It is also used to make bricks for glass kilns.

II. Refractory materials

High temperature furnace lining and crucible: zircon sand is widely used to manufacture high temperature furnace lining, crucible and other key components. Its high melting point (above 2550℃) and excellent thermal shock resistance enable it to run stably in extreme high temperature environment for a long time.

Refractory castables and bricks: Zirconium sand can be used to make refractory materials such as zirconia corundum bricks and zirconia refractory fibers, which perform well in industrial kilns such as high temperature furnaces, glass kilns and cement kilns.

III. Ceramic and glass industries

Ceramic glaze and green body: zircon sand, as an important component of ceramic glaze and green body, can significantly improve the strength, heat resistance and gloss of ceramic products.

Glass additive: zircon sand can be used as an additive in glass production to improve the alkali resistance and fiber strength of glass and improve its optical properties.

IV. Chemical and metallurgical industries

High-temperature equipment parts: zircon sand is used to manufacture high-temperature pipelines, high-temperature valves and other equipment parts, which can maintain stable performance in high-temperature and corrosive environments.

Refractory for metallurgy: ZrO₂-based refractories have high strength, acid resistance and corrosion resistance of molten steel, and are suitable for high-temperature furnace lining materials and crucibles for high-temperature vacuum smelting of precious metals and alloys.

V. Atomic energy industry

Nuclear reactor material: Zirconium sand can be used to produce zirconium alloy, which has important applications in nuclear reactors of atomic power stations, nuclear-powered ships and submarines.

VI. Other high-temperature processes

High-temperature insulation materials: Zirconium sand can be used to make high-temperature insulation materials, such as alumina hollow ball bricks, which perform well in high-temperature energy-saving kilns.

Production of special ceramics: zircon sand is an important raw material for manufacturing high-performance ceramics (such as zirconium diboride ceramics), which are widely used in high-temperature structural ceramics, electrode materials and nuclear control materials.

To sum up, zircon sand is widely used in high-temperature technology, especially in the fields of casting, refractories, ceramics and glass industry, and its excellent performance makes it an indispensable material.
