What Are The Special Applications of Mullite Powder in Aerospace Component Casting

Mullite powder has many special applications in aerospace component casting, mainly in the following aspects:

I. Manufacturing high-performance ceramic cores

Mullite powder can be used to make ceramic cores for turbine blades of aero-engines and gas turbines. These cores need to have good high-temperature properties in high-temperature environment, such as high-temperature strength, thermal shock resistance and low deformation. By adding mullite whiskers or other reinforcing phases, the performance of the ceramic core can be significantly improved, making it stable at high temperatures from 1550℃ to 1700℃.

II. Mold materials for precision casting

Mullite powder has high refractoriness (≥1750℃), low expansion coefficient and good chemical stability, and is suitable for manufacturing precision casting molds. These characteristics enable it to withstand the impact of high-temperature molten metal, while maintaining the dimensional accuracy of the mold, reducing the deformation and defects of the casting, and improving the surface quality and dimensional accuracy of the casting.

III. Improving casting efficiency and quality

The mold shell made of mullite powder has good shelling performance, and the casting after pouring is easy to clean and not easy to deform. In addition, the low impurity content and high purity of mullite powder can reduce the oxidation and pollution of castings and improve the purity and quality of castings.

IV. Used for manufacturing heat-resistant parts

Mullite powder can be used to manufacture heat-resistant components in aerospace field, such as the shell and combustion chamber of rocket engine. These parts need to work in high temperature and high pressure environment, and mullite powder is an ideal material because of its excellent heat resistance and corrosion resistance.

V. As raw materials for casting coatings

Mullite powder can also be used to make casting coatings, which have good high temperature resistance, thermal shock stability and chemical erosion resistance. Castings with mullite powder coating have better smoothness and higher yield.

VI. Directional solidification for complex parts

In the aerospace field, many complex parts (such as hollow blades) need to be manufactured by directional solidification process. Mullite powder reinforced ceramic core can remain stable at high temperature, ensuring the dimensional accuracy and qualified rate of blades.

To sum up, mullite powder has many unique advantages in the casting of aerospace parts, which can significantly improve the casting quality and efficiency and meet the demand of high precision and high performance castings in the aerospace field.
