Sintered mullite is widely used in iron and steel industry, mainly in the following aspects:

I. Blast furnace

Sintered mullite brick is widely used as lining material of blast furnace because of its excellent slag resistance and high temperature performance. Mullite brick can effectively resist the erosion of high temperature slag and keep the integrity of furnace lining. In addition, mullite-corundum bricks are also used in tuyere, furnace wall and bottom of blast furnace, which need higher wear resistance and erosion resistance.

II. Hot blast stove

In the hot blast stove, sintered mullite is used to make ceramic burners and checker bricks. For example, the mullite-andalusite-cordierite brick has high load softening temperature, low creep and good thermal shock resistance, which can meet the complex working conditions of hot blast stove burners. In addition, mullite brick is also used in the vault of hot blast stove and the middle and upper part of combustion chamber.

III. Ladle and tundish

Sintered mullite brick and castable are used for lining of ladle and tundish. These materials have good thermal shock resistance and corrosion resistance, and can remain stable in high temperature environment. For example, mullite-silicon carbide castable is used as the lining of ladle and tundish, which can effectively resist the corrosion of molten steel.

IV. Heating furnace

Sintered mullite brick and castable are also widely used in the lining of heating furnace. Mullite brick can withstand the erosion of high temperature airflow and slag, and keep the integrity of furnace lining. In addition, mullite-corundum castable is also used as the lining of heating furnace, which has higher strength and corrosion resistance.

V. Continuous casting system

Mullite-corundum products are used in tundish and stopper during continuous casting. These materials have higher high temperature strength and wear resistance, and can withstand high mechanical stress. In addition, mullite composite refractories are also used in other parts of the continuous casting system to improve the fire resistance.

VI. Other applications

Sintered mullite is also used to manufacture the lining of blast furnace hot air main pipe, hot metal desulfurization spray gun and other equipment. Mullite brick and castable can effectively prolong the service life of equipment because of their excellent corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance.

The application of sintered mullite in iron and steel industry benefits from its high refractoriness, low porosity, good thermal shock resistance and corrosion resistance, making it an ideal refractory in high temperature environment.
